This is also the capacity posted in the Geno's Garage tech section. The owner's manual also states to only fill to a level "3/4 inch below" fill plug hole.I put in exactly recommend amount of 1.75 quarts. That amount barely fill up the bigger cover. The Dana 300 takes a GL5 rated gear oil, same as the diffs. No additives needed. The transmission however takes a GL4 rated gear oil or synchromesh fluid. A gl5 rated oil has too much sulfur in it which affects the synchromesh parts. Mike.If it's a '75, it will be a 9 1/4", it will have the 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern, as will the '77 model axle and any other 1/2 ton axle built between '75 and '79. In '80 they went back to the larger 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern. You can swap parts but if you swap the entire axle you will end up with mismatched wheel patterns.
